Sākshi’s work over the last 25 years has focused on strengthening systemic mechanisms, and enabling preventive interventions for the practice of Everyday Equality. The PIL, ‘Vishakha vs St of Rajasthan’, which got us the binding Vishakha Directions in 1997, the judge made law on Prevention of Workplace Sexual Harassment which led to the formulation of the legislation/ ACT in 2013 is evidence of the same.
The PIL, Sakshi vs Union of India, through its recommendations has provided the bedrock for the subsequent ACTs on Sexual Assault, Juvenile Justice, and recommended procedures for cases of Child Sexual Abuse, as collated in the 172nd Law Reform. Judicial education on Gender Equality through the Asia Pacific Advisory Forum across the five countries in the Region under the aegis of the then Chief Justice of India, Hon’Justice A M Ahmadi, is another evidence of our focus. Executive Director of Sakshi, Smita Bharti has a career spanning over three
decades in Theatre and Social Art Interventions for Behavior change. Through research, training, workshops, performances, campaigns and publications, she works extensively and intensively with women and adolescents in difficult and challenging circumstances, in prisons with victims under trial, with survivors in situations of domestic violence, sexual abuse and incest physically and mentally challenged individuals. She also works with policy and decision makers for systemic change and is a recipient of the Karmaveer Puraskar for Social Change.
As a pioneer in establishing the prevention of sexual harassment at all workplaces, Naina Kapur co-founded Sakshi in 1993. She has framed and acted as lead instructing counsel before the Supreme Court of India in 1997 which resulted in legally binding directions on workplace sexual harassment – Vishaka Guidelines which led to the formation of POSH 2013. A prolific speaker and presenter, Naina has enrolled national and international audiences into the value and practice of equality and social context thinking. Characterized by an inclusive approach, Naina’s work has found creative expression in numerous publications.
Over a highly successful career spanning three decades, Sanjiv Sharma has produced over 60 Television Shows like Indian Idol, Comedy Circus, Crime Patrol and more. Sanjiv has also directed over 500 Ad films for global brands like Asian Paints, HUL, P&G, Cadbury’s, Reckitt & Colman, Britannia, Titan, Coca-Cola, Pepsi Foods, ITC etc. He started his professional journey with Ogilvy in 1979. Founded Pallette, the ad-film company, co-founded Optimystix Entertainment in 2000 and has grown it to one of the leading TV production houses in India and is now a Governing Council Member of Sakshi.
